Schoolies

Schoolies Week is an Australian tradition that allows high school graduates to enjoy a week-long holiday just after their last high school exams finish.

As one of the most popular events amongst teenagers, Schoolies on the Gold Coast draws thousands of visitors nationwide.

Schoolies is aimed at those just finishing their Year 12 exams. Schoolies is a pre-arranged 3-week-long party where 17-18-year-olds flock to the Gold Coast for a massive party in celebration of finishing high school.

Typically, the festival runs for three weeks, starting near the end of November and until mid-December. The event was first launched in the Gold Coast, and later, it spread over the state of Queensland. It now gets celebrated all over Australia.

During the Schoolies celebration, there are plenty of parties with DJs, live music, beach parties, pool parties, and so much more. Basically, the Gold Coast turns into one giant party during this period.

Some of the official schoolie events require pre-registration, and accommodation needs to be booked very early, as with over 35,000 students flocking to the Gold Coast during this period, accommodation books out fast.

Access to the Schoolies Hub does not require pre-registration. However, Schoolies must obtain a wristband to gain access. Wristbands can be obtained by presenting a valid Australian Year 12 photo ID (if no photo is on your school ID, bring another form of photo ID, such as a driver’s licence or passport).

    • Hi Andrew,

I will assume she is arriving into Gold Coast Airport (Coolangatta). There are a number of transport options to get her in and out of the airport including taxi’s, a shuttle service, bus transport as well as private transfers.

Check out the link here which lists the various public transport options to and from the airport.

Experience Oz also offers reliable transfers door to door which might be a good option if your daughter doesn’t want to navigate the public transport system. Here is a link for an arrival transfer. Here is a link for a departure transfer. They are around $21 per person which is good value to be taken door to door without the hassle. If she is travelling with friends, they only need to purchase a ticket each and they can travel together.

All the best for a safe and fun Schoolies experience!
      Jess

  • Hi I’m going to surfers on the 14th December 2013 and planning on going to the theme parks etc how busy will it be and are schoolies still hanging around and also is it a mess from schoolies? Thanks Andy

    • Hi Andy,

Most of the Schoolies would have left by then (most of the official events would have finished the week prior and teenagers getting a hotel room outside of the festival would be hard), but odds are that it will still be busy as it’s getting into peak season and you are going to be going on a Saturday.

Having said that, arrive early and head straight to the best attractions of the park (Superman Escape for Movie World, and the Buzzsaw and Tower of Terror for Dreamworld) and you might get a few rides before the queues form. Additionally, for like $20, you can get a Q4U system at Dreamworld and ride twice the amount of rides – it’s similar to Disney’s Fastpass system.

      Have a great holiday!

      Thanks
      Michael
